Selected masterpieces from Museum Langmatt in Baden near Zurich bring French Impressionism to Vienna. The collection, assembled from 1908 by Jenny and Sidney Brown, includes key works by Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Paul Gauguin, and a particularly strong group by Pierre‑Auguste Renoir. While Museum Langmatt is under renovation, highlights of this unique private collection are presented at the Lower Belvedere.
The Browns acquired a representative selection of Impressionist paintings from international galleries. Beyond paintings, their collection included French furniture, sculptures, drawings, textiles, silver, porcelain, and Chinese ceramics. The mostly small‑scale formats once hung in the private rooms of their Art Nouveau home, Villa Langmatt, enabling everyday encounters with art. Since 1990 the former Brown residence has been open to the public as Museum Langmatt. Curated by Alexander Klee.

Paul Cézanne — Peaches, Carafe, and Person (c. 1900). A landmark still life and the first Cézanne to enter a Swiss collection, pivotal to the Langmatt holdings and to modern art’s evolution.
Claude Monet — Ice Floes at Twilight (1893). An atmospheric Seine motif capturing transient light on drifting ice, emblematic of Monet’s serial investigations of nature.
Camille Pissarro — Boulevard Montmartre, Spring (1897). A vibrant Paris cityscape by the movement’s elder, showcasing urban rhythm and modern life.
Paul Gauguin — Still Life with Bowl of Fruit and Lemons (c. 1889–1890). Bold color and form signal Gauguin’s move beyond Impressionism toward Symbolism.
Pierre‑Auguste Renoir — The Boat (c. 1878). A luminous riverside scene; the show dedicates a substantial focus to Renoir with over twenty works.
